Why this initiative?

The report of the Working Group on cabotage adopted by the Forum on shipping in March 2003, inter alia, the following recommendation:

"The Forum for the ltl freight shipping recommends setting up a table of dialogue on cabotage as proposed in the draft report. The work of this table will, among other things:

a) develop a strategic plan;
b) Ensure the implementation of recommendations to be
adopted by the Forum;
c) to follow up the measures proposed;
d) to seek and consider other measures or ideas,
for the development of cabotage;
e) to entrust the management and coordination of the table

Between the adoption of the report and the beginning of the Table, the government policies have ensured that the term "cabotage" is increasingly replaced by "short-distance ltl freight shipping. In order to adapt the approach to that developed elsewhere in the world, it was agreed to designate the new body under the name Table shipping short distance.

What is the short sea shipping?

The short shipping distance may be defined as transporting goods and passengers by water over relatively short distances. It may be on lakes and in networks of rivers or river systems but also along the coast. This is mainly domestic shipping but can also include cross-border traffic (Canada - USA - Mexico). It is not shipping for crossing the great oceans of the world.
